Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Photography has evolved from a mere artistic expression to a powerful tool for documenting and preserving cultural heritage. In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State, photography plays a critical role in capturing traditional ceremonies, festivals, attire, and architectural designs, ensuring that these cultural elements are preserved for future generations. Photographs serve as visual archives that document the essence of a community’s identity, fostering a sense of pride and continuity. According to Musa and Abdullahi (2023), photography contributes significantly to cultural preservation by providing tangible evidence of traditions and practices that may otherwise fade over time. However, the extent to which photography impacts cultural preservation in Kano Municipal remains underexplored, particularly in the context of changing cultural dynamics and technological advancements. This study investigates the role of photography in preserving cultural heritage, emphasizing its contributions, challenges, and potential for enhancing cultural sustainability.
